How do I get set up?

Download the myGovID app, enter your details, and add your identity documents.

Before you start

To set up your myGovID, you will need:

a smart device

The myGovID app is compatible with most smart devices.

an email address

As it's your personal digital identity, you should set up your myGovID using a personal email address. It should not be a shared or work email address.

to be 15 years or older

Age restrictions may also apply to use some government online services.

Three easy steps to set up your myGovID


Download the myGovID app

Enter your details

Open the myGovID app and follow the prompts. You will need to enter your full name, date of birth and email address.

After entering these details you’ll have a Basic identity strength. A Basic identity strength only allows access to some government online services. You may need to meet additional requirements depending on the service. 


Add your identity documents

A Standard identity strength allows you to access all participating government online services. You’ll need two of the following Australian identity documents (your name must match on both):

  • driver’s licence or learner’s permit
  • passport
  • birth certificate
  • visa (using your foreign passport)
  • citizenship certificate
  • ImmiCard
  • Medicare card - once you verify one of the documents above in the app, you'll have the option to add your Medicare card.

If your name doesn't match across your two identity documents, you may be able to verify this using a change of name certificate (Tasmania, South Australia, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory only) or a marriage certificate. Otherwise you should update your documents to match before you verify your first document.

In future, you'll be able to use other identity documents and face-matching technology.

Link your myGovID to a business

To use myGovID with participating government online services, you need to link your myGovID to a business in Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).

If you're the principal authority of the business, you'll need to link your myGovID to your Australian business number (ABN) in RAM first. You can then set up authorisations in RAM for employees and others. They will use their myGovID to log into RAM to accept the authorisation request.
